...tournament.Why is Roger now 165 ahead of?
Just when I think I understand the point scoring system something screwy like this happens.
I don't understand how Nole can beat Roger and WIN the tournament but lose points to him???
I'd appreciate someone explaining this to me.Thanks!

Alright so here is how it works when you win matches in a tournament they give or take points from how you did last year so if roger lost first round in it last year and nole won then the next year in rog got to the finals he would get a lot more points then nole

Below are a couple of links for you from ATP World Tour. In the second one, look for section 9 [IX] near the end for a explanation of the rankings.

About 45 times a year, ATP does its rankings. Points that were just won are added to players' totals AND points are taken off [subtracted] players' totals that were earned 52 weeks ago. You may have heard the expression "defending points."

If a player does really well at a certain tournament, if/when he plays the *same* tournament the following year, he must do at least as well as he did the previous year, or he will lose ranking points. Why? Because every week points are taken OFF the players' totals from 52 weeks ago.

Now, if your favorite player plays and does well at some point in the calendar that he *didn't* play the previous year, then he would gain all the points he won, and no points would come off *during that particular week.*

Guys like Djokovic add a lot of points when they win, but they also lose points when they don't defend [play as well in] the same tournaments where they had victories 52 weeks ago.

For example, next January, in 2012, Djokovic will need to repeat his victory in Melbourne at the Australian Open, otherwise he will lose X number of ranking points. The number would be 2000, minus however many points he wins at the AO in 2012.

If he wins the AO again next January, then he will replenish all of his 2000 points for another 52 weeks.

To find out why a player's point total went up or down, you need to know how many points are going to come off from 52 weeks ago, as well as how many points were just won. That will show you why Djoko's total went down in your example, and why Federer's total went up.
