Do cars with manual transmissions have transmission fluid in them?

If they do, how do I check the transmission fluid on a 1991 GMC Sonoma with the 2.5 liter I4 engine?
 
They use gear oil and you check it by opening the plug on the side and sticking your little finger in there. The gear oil should be up to the bottom of that hole.
