Do I have to get a data plan to get the T-Mobile Shadow?

I was wondering do you have to get a data plan to get the T-Mobile Shadow? Also how much is the Shadow at the t-mobile store with 2 year contract...not the online price.....
 
I dont know about the data plan, but If i"m not mistaken I think it's $299 or $349. I wanna upgrade to the Shadow, looks like the perfect phone.
