Do I need an inverter if I am using a cold cathode light outside the computer?

I am going to be doing a small project with a 4" cold cathode light and I am wondering if I still need the power inverter if I do it this way: instead of using the 4-pin molex connector to connect it to the inverter and then the computer, I am using a AC power inverter to 4 pin molex, and then right into the wall outlet. Will this be too much for the light, or too little and will I still need the inverter?
