Do I need to get a fake tail for showing if my app has a rat tail?

I just got a new horse and he was shown western/english pleasure before, and I am planning on maybe doing a few open shows this summer and fall. He is very well muscled and well put together, however he has a short little tail that doesn't even reach his hocks. I know its a characteristic of the breed and I don't mind it but will i not place as well as the other horses with the long thick tails? Should I really invest in an extension even for an open show?
