Do intelligent female leads exist in anime?

I've grown tired of the lead girls in romance anime (and most anime for that matter -_-) being "not very bright, but she's got heart and A LOT of it!" No matter how smart the girl may be there is always some male who's ridiculously smarter than her. D=

Does a show with a smart lead girl exist? (and I don't mean some side character. I want her to be the focus of the show.)

Only show I've seen come close was Mnemosyne, and even then Rin had several "what made you think that was a good idea?" moments.

Utena Tenjou was a strong female lead, but I can't remember if she was intelligent... or just a bad*ss (with a lot of drive >_>)

If you have suggestions I'm game for everything, including yuri :D.
However I am not game for mecha. Unless it's not All-Mecha-All-The-Time (ex. Burst Angel)

Don't mention Maid-Sama. They undercut her efforts by having her work at a maid cafe...seriously? (it's for comedy I get it. No one would watch anime about an intelligent girl who works at a super-market/pizza place/bookstore/etc.)

I'm open to your thoughts! =D

I can't say the girls are a lead, but they are certainly "main" characters. Also, I don't watch yuri so this is a tough one. I can't think of any right now :l
 
Haha, that's good point. I guess it's difficult to find things like that when it comes to anime, especially latey with all this moeblob rubbish coming out. I don't know if I've seen anything where the female lead is on paper smart, mostly just kind of really good at what they do? Uh let's see.....

I guess there is Canaan but I can't really remember how smart she was, she could hack and stuff though.

I guess there is Black Lagoon, Revy isn't THEE main character but she's one of them and she's bloody badass. She's not actually smart, she's just not stupid when it comes to what she does, the only real intelligence she has is that of guns and how not to get yourself killed.

You might have already seen it but Ouran Highschool host club is kind of like that, everyone is smart but she got a scholarship for the school whereas everyone else got in by money or connections
