Do makeup parties sell old makeup?

I got invited to makeup parties in which the host sell top of the line makeup such as Mac products for a low price. For example, a Mac mascara costs $14 but the host will sell it for $8. It makes me wonder where the heck do they get all this expensive makeup and how are they able to sell it for a low price? Is the makeup old, expired? If that is the case I rather pay full price for brand new makeup then ruin my face with old, expired makeup.
