Do you have to have BlackBerry service to have a BlackBerry?

My boyfriend gave me his old Black Berry and he said i have to pay 100 bucks a mnth for black berry serivce. Can i just put my sim card in and use it??
 
try it. bb business service- like internet usage, etc is an option on your plan, so your sim card may work for phone only.
 
Yes. I have done exactly that. You will be able to use as a phone and for texting. You will not have internet, email, etc.
