Do you need a light with a tropical fish tank?

Hi, I'm Just wondering, Do you NEED a light for a tropical fish tank?

If so, Why?

If you want plants.

You dont NEED one, but why wouldnt you want one? Its best to give fish a night and day just like we get. If you have natural light, that would work too. Youd just need to be aware that algae growth is more likely to make an occurance.
