Do you really have to be 18 to go into gadgets and gizmos?

So i'm 17, for the first time in my life, I have gotten kicked out of gadgets and gizmos, literally as soon as I walked in, they claim that I have to be 18 to go in there, Is there any actual policy for this or was the salesperson just bsing? I'm in NY by the way
 
That could be actual policy, to reduce the amount of shoplifting done. Unfortunately, there are a number of stores with rules against people under 18 because a few bad apples ruined it for the rest of them.
