Do you really need a photographer at your wedding?

I'm getting married on the 4th of July and our photographer that we had picked is unable to do it on that day. So my question is do you really need a photographer at your wedding or can you have a friend or family member take pictures? Has anyone done this and how did it turn out? Thanks!
