does jail breaking your ipod/iphone have any adverse effects?

yeah go for it.
it does void the warranty so if you crack the screen or anything and u want it fixed by apple you need to do a complete restore in itunes, but that shouldn't be a problem.

also jailbreaking gives you access to all the innards of the ipod, firmware, everything. if you don't have technical knowledge you should just ignore that Open SSH and install your apps using the installer.app

the jailbreak itself most likely won't screw ur ipod (there are a lot of smart coders that work hard to make sure that anything they release won't eff up the ipods) but its what you do afterwards that u have to be careful about.
