Does the Android market and the App store have the same/similar apps?

Deciding between the samsung galaxy s and the Iphone 4 and just want to get info from a less biased source.
 
I have a HTC desire and there are a lot if similarities between the app world and the Android market. There are apps that are available on one and not the other, but not a massive amount, and even the ones that don't appear on both have a very similar equivalent (ie there might not jbe the same app but there'll be a different app that does the same thing!)
