Does the PS3 require a 1080p HDTV in order to play certain Blu-ray discs?

After reviewing all the specs of the PS3 I notice one small detail, in the FAQ listings it mentions that the PS3 can only output 1080p with certain blu-ray discs. Quotation below:

"Copy-protected Blu-ray video discs can only output at 1080p using an HDMI cable connected to a device that is compatible with the HDCP standard."

http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/about/faq

Does this mean that my 720p HDTV can't view this output with its HDMI connection?

Not quite. What the site is saying is that in order to output in 1080P, your television and cable must support HDCP (High Definition Content Protection). You can still output blu-ray discs to 720p, and whether your television supports HDCP or not it will work. This truly only applies to those lucky enough to have 1080p native displays, of which I am not. :D

Blu ray disks can be played in 720 or 1080p. You dont need a 1080p , although the quality would be alot nicer. Not everyone has a 1080p tv, so it wouldn't make any sense to have blu rays in only 1080p.
