Does the 1956 film version of Moby Dick live up to the book? Why/why not?

Also, are there any major parts of the book which it failed to include in the film?

No film could really ever live up to that book, but Gregory Peck does great with Ahab.

Almost all of the subtext and minor plot lines are missing in the film.

In movie form: it is a whaling movie.

In book form it is a treatise on the will of god versus the will of man, of fate versus choice, of righteousness versus the desire for vengeance.
