My buddys got a 97 Jeep Wrangler with the 4.0 six cyl in it and about 125k on it. His wife took it to work and it ran fine there and about have way back and it just started to run loud and died. We towed it back to his garage and tryed to restart it and it is knocking and just barely runs. We pulled all the plus and the plug at the very rear of the motor had the plug end basicly destoyed. We have pretty much figured the engine is junk now. What would cause this? A rod breaking allowing the piston to go up into the plug? Or could something with the cam or valves caused that? Also you cant just pull the oil pan and put in a new piston/rod in that one cyl could you?

Sounds like it popped the head off of a valve. Take the valve cover off and remove that cylinders rocker arms.....is one valve spring taller than the other......?

If the spark is beat to Hell, you'll wanna pull the head and inspect the piston top, anyhow....

Blowed a head gasket. Water went in to the cylinder and exploded. Throwing that cylinder out of time. Probably pitted the cylinder wall, as well. You need to pull the head, Pan, and piston out and take a look.
