Matthew 16: 13-14: "Having come to the region of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked his disciples:" Whom say the people out there who is the Son of man? "They said:" Some say John the Baptist, others who Elijah, others short, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. "
If the people thought that Jesus might be John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah or one of the prophets is because they believed that someone who was dead could come back as another person, because of the response. However, they had no idea how this could happen. Anyway, this passage shows us that at the time of Christ, it was common the idea of reincarnation, which came to be banned by the Church in 553 AD at the Council of Constantinople.
