Mac OS X only: Freeware utility ClearDock removes the semi-transparent background behind the Mac OS X Dock.
After the Dock's background is removed, your launchers will appear to be floating above the desktop. If you don't like the clear look, ClearDock can also set the background color and transparency. ClearDock can also customize (or remove) the triangles below the icons to boot. ClearDock is a free download for Mac OS X only.
