fiat punto dynamic 2005 gearbox fault message?

ive got a fiat punto 2005 reg automatic no fiat book with it driving it yesterday it came up with gearbox fault stopped car started again and message gone could it be fluid but I don't know were to fill it up and what fluid to use cheers

You have an automated manual transmission (Fiat call it "Dualogic"), not a traditional automatic transmission. This uses a conventional manual gearbox, with an electro-hydraulic unit on top that actuates the clutch and gear change.

The "gearbox fault" is probably a problem with this electro-hydraulic unit, possibly a failing hydraulic pump, or low hydraulic fluid level due to a leak. If it occurs again, get the car's diagnostic system read for the stored error code as this will help to diagnose the problem.

Fill/level plug on side of box.
Location and need to have the car flat and level when topping up means that is it a garage job unless you have a pit or a post lift to borrow while you do it
Shouldn't cost more than around £40 at a local independent garage and you could save as you will only pay for the oil used and not for more than you need
