For a LEO or GEO satellite, can you calculate the coverage area?

For a LEO or GEO satellite, can you calculate the coverage area (diameter & angle) from the Earth's reference? I'm assuming that "coverage beam" is equivalent to coverage diameter = "footprint"? As a point of reference, I have an article showing a LEO satelllite coverage diameter is about 8000Km, but there is no demonstration as to how that number is derived.
