For anyone who has the T-Mobile Dash!!!!!!?

I need to save money on with T-Mobile plans and stuff, and I'm wondering if you need internet in order to get on instant messenger?? I really want this phone and I really don't need internet, SMS and instant messaging are basically the only 2 things I need.

Help please!!! Thanks! =)

P.S. If instant messaging DOES work without internet, is it really slow when sending IM's back and forth???
