Ford fiesta 1.8 diesel 1998 (Uk) alternator ?

How can I tell if it's not working?
Bought car today was fine but then after an hour battery went dead.
Luckily I got a spare of a mate and it's been great since. But not sure if it's alternator or battery.
Please help :/ first car
 
there is a device that does that, but as to know as a primitive test turn on the car & while its running take off one of the poles on the Battery turn on the lights if the car stopped that means that the alternator is broken, check the ALT fuse.
