Ford Fiesta Quartz Classic 1996 radio code input problem?

I have a 96 Ford Fiesta Classic and the code I was given does not work. The car radio does not even recognise I am entering the code. It is dead. I was wondering if I have the correct code or how insert the code into the radio. The code I have been given is 5946.

Any help would be appreciated.
 
Either - there is something wrong with the radio like the fuse is blown - to take a code it will be showing some digits/words on the display before you press a button at all.

Or - the wrong code has been entered 10 times in which case you might as well throw it away and get a new radio as it will never be made to work again for less than the cost of a replacement.
