Galileo Galilei observations of Saturn's rings?

I am having trouble figuring out what this means from Britannica encyclopedia: "...Two years later, he found to his surprise that the "companions" had vanished, so that Saturn appeared as a single object. The ring system was then edge-on to the Earth, so that it could not be seen at all in Galileo's telescope..."

What does it mean by "...The ring system was then edge-on to the Earth..."
