I don't think people think cannabis is evil. Most people who don't smoke it either see users as being slightly amusing frazzled hippies or wasted surf-dudes who sit playing Playstation games insteas of achieving anything. Usually the stereotypes of ganja smokers is fairly harmless and benign. The reason people stay away from it is that they see people resembling these stereotypes and don't want to identify themselves with that lifestyle. To put it another way. When I was young, I saw the stereotype of martial artists as cool, controlled, wise and powerful, so I've grown up with the idea that MAs are good and something I want to aline myself with. Other people grew up seeing cigarettes as "sophisticated" and "mature" thanks to all the images of Humphrey Bogart or Lauren Bacall puffing away, so they associate cigarettes with that image. Again, we create a "stereotype" and decide to what extent resembling that stereotype is important to us. Nobody really thinks potheads are evil malicious nazi type characters - ask the average person and they'll probably describe something resembling Bill Bailey ...hardly the most menacing of figures. People just decide that it's not a worthwhile or productive role to aim for.
