Gateway not connecting to internet?

I have a Marvell Yukon cable modem...it says i have an active connection (100 mbps)...no firewall...but for some reason it won't allow me to browse on the internet or connect to anything for that matter. Connection is active, I've reset the modem, turned it off and on...continues to say it's connected but I cannot visit any web pages or go online in general. I have wireless on this laptop, so for a quick fix I went out and bought a router...and that works. But the only thing is i can't register the product because it requires you to plug in the cable modem directly into your computer first. Therefore my router is not password protected currently. What can I do? I've ran my norton and spyware and there's nothing.
