We have had a male gerbil alone for about 5 months. (We got him about 6 months ago.) Both of his old friends died when they were sick. We purchased a baby gerbil 2 days ago and had 2 separate cages and we switched them back and forth for 2 days then let them see eachother for about 2 minutes in the 20 liter aquarium. It didn't go so well. No blood was drawn but the baby CONSTANTLY follows Sam (the older gerbil) and Sam gets VERY agitaed and it seems that Sam is sniffing the baby vigurously but I can't tell if he is sniffing or biting. They start to wrestle and nip and it seems Sam is starting the wrestling. I am very scared to put them together but they are both males so I thought it was supposed to be easy. We have a 10 gallon and 20 liter side by side so they can see eachother and we switch them multiple times a day. I feel terrible for taking the baby from the store where he had friends and now he may have to live alone. The whole point was so Sam wouldn't be so lonely. It took so long to convince my mother and she was right. Sam isn't liking our baby boy! I don't want them to be alone! Would a screen divider help them overcome this? can they chew through it or climb over?
