Prolific musician, poet, author and hip-hop pioneer Gil Scott-Heron, who wrote The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, died in New York on Friday at age 62. Though the cause of death is unknown, Scott-Heron had been battling cocaine addiction and HIV infection for decades.

Considered the Godfather of Rap, Scott-Heron was a key figure in post-civil rights articulation of Black America, while his early works were a forerunner to modern hip-hop.

An outpouring of condolences hit Twitter from leaders in the rap industry including Diddy, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Usher, Lupe Fiasco and many others.
