Great Vacation Spot in the Northeast?

My dad is trying to plan a vacation for the end of August
Doyou have any suggestions as to great vacation spots? Please include info on surrounding entertainment as well.
We are willing to drive a little south, west, etc. if needed, but we live in nyc, so the max drive would be half a day.

Check this site. It talks about different places that are great for visits.
It even talks about haunted places that is open for tourists, weirdest hotels and some of them are in the North East.
