D3 emailed on Friday to let everyone know that the copy of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords that had been sitting on the developer and journalist only PartnerNet version of Xbox Live, was playable for hands-on previews. While the final version of the game doesn't hit until later this summer, I'm happy to report that the current version looks pretty damn slick.
Both Fahey and I have a slight, ever so slight addiction to this title that combines all the best of a classic role-playing game with Bejeweled. While my favorite form of the game has always been the DS (over both the PSP and the PC), I think that there's a good chance that the Xbox Live Arcade version might unseat it.
My biggest concern, when I heard the game was going to Live, was that it was going to be annoying tying to move around the board flipping mana, gold, experience and skulls. I'm not sure why I was concerned about this, since I played the hell out of Hexic when it came out. Fortunately, my unfounded concerns remained unfounded when I got my hands on the game. Moving around the screen and selecting pieces was a breeze.
The game is very similar to the other versions, in fact it remains nearly unchanged with the exception of the controls, the graphics and the online play. The graphics, and the use of rumble, add a lot to the experience. Sure it's just a dressed up puzzler, but the addition of some pretty sharp special effects and a much crisper overall look help make the game that much more fun to play.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find an opponent to play against during my time with the game. This is due mostly to the fact that the game is still in development and on Partnernet, meaning the pool of people have access to it is incredibly limited. I can't imagine that there would be any problems with it, and the idea that I would be able to find people to play against without having to worry about finding them in the physical world has great appeal to me.
Fahey's already challenged me to a match, and I'm more than a little giddy at the prospect since he's been duking me on Pokemon since Diamond and Pearl came out.
