Has anyone heard of Christ self emptying?

In my Christology class the teacher was saying that Christ emptied himself of certain attribute or gave them up. An example he gave was Christ not knowing the day of his return, but only the father. But it does not say he gave those attributes up it only says he did not know. It seems that my teachers is only speculating yet he is teaching this as fact. Is this teaching true? If so, does anyone have more solid evidence?

Matthew 24
36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[f] but only the Father.

Philippians 2:6-7. Christ emptied Himself in the sense that instead of as it was in the beginning (John 1:1, "the Word was God..") He lost not His Deity, but it was merely a subordination of His role, to become a man and be a servant. Verse 6 says that "...who [Christ], existing in the form of God..." Referring to the present tense.
