Has it become apparent that, even a democratic system can be at the mercy of elites?

Let's take a moment to disect American democracy, and the extent to which this democracy has been taken over by special interests. In a democracy, the political power is distributed evenly among all segments of the population and, through votes, the members of that society endow their representatives with the power to act in their best interests

BUT, there is more than one type of power, power that comes through media influence but more fundamentally money. Corporations in America have acquired the power to convince large segments of America's populations to vote against their own interests. They have done this by buying various networks, the most obvious of which are FOX news & MSNBC; they have created organizations whose job it is to litterally fabircate studies to support views that allow them to destroy the environment; they have an incredible amount of psychological power in deciding how voters think & vote; they control politicians through lobbyists, and now they can control campaigns by litterally funding people into office

In spite of all this, Americans still think they live in a Democracy. Presidents may come & go, and party stances may change, but corporations are always running the show
