Having a problem with my tach?

I installed a autogage 5 inch tach with shift light in my car when the car comes on it goes to the shift point and stays there i can turn the knob and the needle goes up and down which way i turn it. If i turn the knob all the way down the needle goes to one grand then i can hit the gas and it will rev uup but the shift light comes on at 1500. What did i do wrong? The car is a 1995 SOHC dodge neon
Yes I cut the wires in the back to make it work for a 4 cylinder engine

Are there different terminals (or a switch) to select for a 4, 6, or 8 cylinder engine? Make sure you've got the right one.
