If you would have bothered to read the article yourself you wouldn't have to ask that.

Hawking has been trying to bridge astrophysics with quantum physics. In quantum physics particles appear uncaused sometimes.

Gravity is a property of matter. The question is where did matter come from, not gravity, and (according to Stephen Hawking) quantum physics tells us that matter could easily have come to exist spontaneously.

He said it comes out of nothing, but I don't think he really means that. There is a quantum web that has to exist, so you want to know where *that* came from.

Within the web, a particle can come out of nowhere. But it is still within the web. When a particle appears, additional gravity appears to balance it out so the net amount of energy remains the same. No new net energy was created. Just equal positive (matter) and negative (gravity) energy.

I believe the quantum web has existed forever. It has no beginning, but could have been much smaller.

Gravity is the curvature of space-time, so there is no space without gravity. Thus, to ask "where" gravity came from is linguistic nonsense.

But, since a cause must come before an effect, asking what caused the universe is also nonsense. Hawking is attempting to use language where it is not appropriate.

Read: Albert Einstein's 'Theory of Relativity'.

This will give you great insight into the understanding of gravity. Gravity isn't some special supernatural force, you know. It's a perfect product of nature itself.
