Help booking flights, when should I buy?

I'm looking to go to Japan this summer, end of July in to August. The price for flights on skyscanner has gone up £100 since last week. However, I know I'm looking well in advance and that prices change all the time. Should I wait for a sale? Or is there an optimum time to buy? Any help would be greatly appreciated..!
