I'm writing a story that's set in the future. It's a post apocalyptic story where the world has partly re-built. The first chapter shows the 3 main characters(more introduced later, but these are important for the initial conflict), going about an afternoon. As it goes through it, it shows a little about the town and how the world is. That night/next morning the conflict is introduced.
I'm not sure how far to go in introducing the characters and background. Without understanding how the world is post apocalypse, the conflict wouldn't make sense (as it wouldn't really relate or happen in current times). The characters personalities and relationships to each other affect how they deal with the conflict. But I don't want to overload information. Anyone have hints or tips on how to give background on the setting and characters without making it seem overbearing? How can I spread it throughout the afternoon?
