Help with google android backup?

I just recently bought a LG Thrill and spent a few hours getting it to the perfect settings. A day later it got stuck on the startup screen (even though I didn't try to root it) and I was forced to reset it to factory settings. Now I am trying to find something to back it up, without rooting.
I read that it Google can backup the settings on the android device so that the settings will be there even when I change my phone. I looked under the Privacy tab of my phone settings and I didn't see the option to auto backup. Does anyone know how to backup my phone settings?

This should have been an option when you first setup your phone after you sign into your google/gmail account.
