and somehow managed to tun off the ability to turn the phone on its side and use the keyboard that way, anyone help?

I have the xperia x10, so i'm not 100% sure it will be the same, but i expect it will.
anyway, just had a play with mine and you need to go onto the settings, then 'display', and then check the option that says 'auto rotate screen' - this works with mine, and with any luck it will be the same for you :)
