I am wondering how thoughts are written. For example, speech is used with parenthesis as in "blah blah." How are thoughts expressed? I thought that they were italics but I am unsure. If anybody knows, please answer. Thanks in advance.
lol, I don't know why I wrote parenthesis there, you're right they should be quotation marks. :P

Those are quotation marks not parentheses. :D
But, thoughts are generally expressed in italics, though I know some authors that place them in apostrophes.
I also have come across writers that do both.

You can use a number of tricks. Simply writing, the character thought blah blah. Or I thought blah blah.
You can also use single hyphens 'Im a dumbass, oh shit am I thinking out loud?'. When using hyphens its better not to put the thought in its own paragraph as you would with speech, but in some situations you might do just that.
Italics stress a point in the extreme and are used rarely or ocassionally.
