how can i catch abra? (fire wersion for gameboy advance)?

every time i try to catch it, it just telaports away =[
i tried using a regular pokeball on a leval nine, but it didn't work...
and i haven't been to any towns with anything but regular pokeballs, and trees are blocking my way to moving forward, and i don't have cut =[
any ideas on what i could do??
please help!
