I was given a second-hand playpen, but the people were severe chain-smokers (didn't know that at the time or else I wouldn't have accepted the offer). Now I have a playpen, accompanying bassinet and changing table attachments, and mobile that all stink of cigarettes and are brown along the edges (I'm guessing a combo of dirt and nicotine).
I don't want either of my kids anywhere near the thing unless it is completely disinfected and free of the nicotine, grime, etc., and stink-free....but it can't be put in the wash. I'll get rid of it if I can't get it clean, but it would be a huge help to already have this equipment.
How can I clean it without leaving harmful fumes/by-products for the baby? I've read equal parts of vinegar and water, along with a lot of scrubbing, but will this get rid of all the smoke from the material? And will it get rid of the dirt as well? Any suggestions are much appreciated.
