My Internet is being very fickle. Sometimes it is fast and other times its slow. when its slow I move my Mouse over the wireless connection icon, and it says I have good signal, but the Mps is at 1.0. Is there anyway to make it stay higher than that?

depends on how far away from the router you are, the closer you get to the router, the better connection you have, another thing is that if you have wireless g the maximum bandwidth you can get is 54Mbps.

Depends on the connection, if you are connected to an internet connection that you share with others, it can slow it down. How close are you to the router? What kind of connection do you have? Their is no real way to make it faster unless you buy a new connection. Also i was having problems with my wireless router, it affected my games, but when i directly connected my laptop to the actual wireless router, it sped up.

You probably need to do the following:

1. Stop downloading so much stuff to your hard drive. The more you have in your hard drive, the slower your computer will be.
2. Defragment your hard drive.
3. If you're using Windows (i.e., XP, etc.), Click START, CONTROL PANEL, then FREE UP SPACE ON YOUR HARD DISK in order to make programs run faster.
Generally, internet speed is dictated by how much your internet service provider (isp) is alloting you. Basically, the more you pay them, the faster the internet they give you.

There are a few things, however, that can slow your internet speed down.
1. Firewalls. Firewalls almost always slow down your upload and download speeds. If you're behind a router, it's using NAT protocol by default, so you don't need a software firewall. Make sure if you're behind a router, you have the software firewall uninstalled. If you're running a third party software firewall like zonealarm, you can disable the firewall in windows xp by clicking start --> run --> then typing "firewall.cpl" and clicking "disable".

2. Malware. Most windows computers are infected with some form of virus, worm, or spyware, and these almost always take up your bandwidth (or internet speed). Make sure you're keeping your computer clean with up to date anti virus and anti spyware software. I recommend Avast! or AVG for antivirus solutions, and Webroot's SpySweeper for spyware.

Of course, if your computer itself has problems and is very slow, that will effect internet speed too. Make sure the operating system is healthy before you benchmark your internet speed.

Lastly, Test your internet speed here ScanMySpeed.com when testing your speed online, make sure you have any applications which might be using up bandwidth *closed*. If you have an instant messenger like MSN running, close it. BitTorrent trackers like azureus, p2p clients like limewire -- anything that uses up internet should be closed when you test your speed. I would even disable any firewalls you're running, just until the test is over....Think your internet speed will sounds better now is it not? Good luck ....
