if you go under contacts and select the one you want to set it for press your menu button and then select setting and you can then choose notification sounds for each one. If you want a different one for text messages, if you download Handcent you can go under a contact inside hancent under their their thread and in the upper right click on the cog wheel and select notifications and then notification sound.
