how can i share files from a desktop to a lap top without having the internet on?

i am using xp on my computer and my girlfriend is using vista on her laptop.i have a ethernet cord but i dont know if that will work.
can we connect from one computer to another .
 
You need a cross-over ethernet cable or an ethernet switch. Most ethernet cables are NOT cross-over. Then all you do is switch on file sharing on the folders that you want to shared and that is it. Your PCs will both be browsable.
