How can I stop burned DivX Movies from shrinking on my TV screen?

OK, this question isn't as simple as it might sound. I have gone through all of DVD Player's and TV's Menus and there is no setting to help this. Instead of being widescreen, they are stretched vertically with black bars (like on wide screen) on the left and right side. I am getting these DivX movies via torrent download and was wondering how to stop this. Is there any setting to change before I burn them? Should I change the dimensions of the movie on the computer (if so, how?)? Is the program am using to burn the movies that is creating the problem? (The program is Windows' Default - Windows DVD/Movie Maker, and yes, am I hitting wide screen when I burn them). Any answers at all would be great!

Thanks
so should I set it to 16:9?

when you go to burn the dvd you have to set the parameter. For example your computer screen has an option 600x800. Most televison aspect ration is 4:3 wide screen in 16:9 so use this to firgure out the demensions of your television and then set the parameter accordingly before you burn it. It should be an option or in preferences in the burning program you use

I do not know about the proper settings on conversion, but you may not have to convert those files.
Most DVD players are DivX compatible, meaning they will play movies encoded in either DivX or XviD. All you have to do is burn them as data (takes a few minutes).
I do this all the time and have no issues on playback on the TV.

If your player is compatible, be sure to check what type of disks it will accept. Mine only accepts CD-R for DivX/XviD.
