how can i tell if it's my power steering pump or rack & pinion? (2000 chevy express)?

got stuck in a snow pile last night, and while rocking/turning back and forth to get out, my steering stiffened up. I've had a few beaters years ago that had power steering problems, but this seems alot stiffer then those were. My pump did show some age (200k), a minor grind when turning hard all the way to one side, but not a big deal and i put conditioner in it months ago. I assumed power steering pump at first, but buddy says if it's that stiff, he thinks he may be the rack & pinion. Whats the tell tale sign to look for or how can I tell which is at fault. Pumps not leaking, i was just goin to replace it in the morning till i heard it could be the dreaded other, nor feel like spending the 5 hours and hundred bucks replacing it if it's not even the issue. Help with this is much apreciated. 2000 chevy express 1500, v6, conversion/work van.

If it's the rack, steering stiffness would be more pronounced in the morning. I have never seen a rack in my life that caused a "stiff steering wheel all day". Usually the rack will act up first thing in the morning and after a few minutes, the steering will free up. I would do this man, call around a few shops where you live, alot of national chain shops do free inspections on these sorts of things, therefore you are out nothing but an hour of your time.
