How can I watch 4oD or BBC iPlayer outside UK? How to use a proxy?

I've tried using a proxy but it still won't work as they do not support java. Anyone know how I can get around this for free? Please give a full explanation of how to do it if you know. I've spent hours and hours trying to do it and I can't! Thanks xx
