how come my multitasking (backgrounding apps) on my iPhone 3G doesn't work?

i updated to the latest version (4.0.1) and i think im supposed to have backgrounding, my friend's iPod touch has it.... but my iPhone 3G won't do it. I click the home button twice (as instructed to do from the video at apple.com) and it just brings up the music options. And when i enter Settings > General > Home Button, under "Double-Click the Home Button for:" it only shows the Home, Search, Phone Favorites, Camera, and iPod options
 
The new update only works on the iphone 3gS and the iPhone 4 or the iPod Touch 3rd Gen and the (Unreleased) iPod touch 4. All the functions (like Multitasking) are not supported on older models.
