How come we don't see many firearms with the magazine placed horizontally anymore?

Weapons like the German FG-42 and the British Sten had their magazines placed horizontally instead of vertically like you see with many weapons today like the M16 and MP5, especially from the bottom as suppose to the top like the Bren, another weapon from the Brits.
What happened? Are they still around? Did they prove to be quite problematic, so problematic that the concept had to be ditched all together? Practically all of the modern weapons that I see these days, even those that haven't been decided upon yet, have the traditional bottom-fed, vertical magazine emplacement.

Its harder to transport and store them if the magazine is horizontal. It also seems to lessen their speed, don't ask me why, when they're horizontal.
