How did JD Salinger sell his soul for those who read Catcher in the Rye?

I was just told me that JD Salinger would be angry at me for reading Catcher in the Rye and when i asked why she told that he is angry that he sold his soul for me. Then she proceeded to tell me that he didn't write it for me or her or another american teen and that he wrote it for himself and that i stole and she stole it and america ruined it. She said she feels terrible and I should too. But i don't understand what she is talking about? Can you help me?
